(Ethiopia) Final Dissemination Workshop on Policy Consultation on Capacity Building for CoEs in Science and Technology Universities and Inauguration of ASTU Satellite Ground Control Station

The STEPI research team visited Ethiopia and held the final dissemination workshop in ASTU on Dec. 4 2018 to share the outcome of the project. This workshop aims to disseminate the overall project outcomes to relevant stakeholders and, at the same time, to collect feedbacks from the participants, which is reflected in the final report. Vice president, CoE director general, each CoE directors of ASTU and releva nt stakeholders attended the workshop.

During the workshop, Dr. Jungwon Lee presented the main contents of the final report including the purpose, the contributors, activities, and recommendations on CoE policy and management of the project. Each CoE directors shared difficulties in running the CoE, due to the low salary, heavy teaching load it is hard to recruit CoE staff from the academic department. He added that even if someone from the academic department volunteers for becoming a staff and CoE is willing to recruit the person, the approval process is also challenging. As recommendations to the above difficulties that CoEs are now facing, Dr. Lee took an example of the GRI cooperative program, in which students from Masters and Doctor Degrees work in the laboratory and conduct research related to thesis. He added that project managers play a role of advisor during the project, and students get paid for his work at the lab. The collected feedbacks and comments from the participants will be reflected in the final report.

On Dec. 5, the first Satellite Ground Control Station has been inaugurated at ASTU with the support of STEPI, KAIST and KARI. More than 40-50 participants including the ASTU president, the vice presidents, an officer from the Korean Embassy and related stakeholders attended its opening ceremony. Dr. Jungwon Lee said in his welcoming remarks that he is pleased to see the opening of the satellite ground control station this year, which is the final year of the STEPI K-innovation program with Ethiopia. He added that he expected the successful operation of the first ASTU satellite ground control station.

 Dr. Lemi Guta, the President of ASTU, congratulated the inauguration of the station and expressed his gratitude towards the Korean government as well as relevant stakeholders from STEPI, KARI and KAIST. He hoped that that with the launch of the first satellite ground control station, ASTU would lead space technology in Ethiopia.

Dr. Paik briefly presented on the STI R&D activities and ASTU satellite ground control station. After the briefing on STI, the participants had the electronics lab tour which was led by Prof. Yun Koo Chung, and moved to the ground station for plaque unveiling. Dr. Bangyeop Kim, the principal researcher at KARI, gave a briefing on ground station and led the on-site ground station tour.

Also, The research team visited KOICA Ethiopia Office and held a meeting with Mr. Dong Ho Kim, the country director, Ms. Ji-eun Seong, the deputy country director, and Ms. Boram Im, the manager of the office. Dr. Jungwon Lee explained the main contents and outcomes of the project with EthiopiaMoreover, the team met with Ms. Jinshil Kim, the 2nd secretary at the Korean Embassy in Ethiopia. Dr. Lee briefly explained the outcomes and achievements of the project with Ethiopia.
