(Cambodia) Capacity-building Workshop in Korea (Cambodia) Capacity-building Workshop in Korea

  • Based on the findings on Cambodia from the previous activities, the STEPI team held a capacity-building workshop to share the best practices of Korea and to practice the technology roadmap as an implementation strategy of the STI policy. STEPI provided guidelines for the preparation of the capacity-building and training workshop two weeks before and identify the relevant experts in Korea.

  • 10 delegations more or less from GS-NSTC and relevant institutions were invited to Korea from May 20 to 25, 2019. Two- or three-day workshop was organized to share the best practices of Korea and to practice the technology roadmap. They visited the relevant Korean organizations and sites, including research institutes, for the on-site observation of their field of interest.

  • The workshop was designed to support Technology Roadmap (TRM) capacity building for officials of the relevant ministries including GS-NSTC and experts of each technology field by sharing the method of building a technology roadmap.

This workshop provided Cambodian policymakers and experts with a good opportunity to use Korean knowledge and know-how as basis for reflection for formulating Cambodia’s pilot TRM. Furthermore, the Cambodian research team had a chance to visit key STI-related organizations in Korea (KIST and National Science Museum) in order to learn best practices on the history, roles, functions, and operations.

  • The STEPI research team collected comments from the Cambodian participants by conducting a survey on the capacity development workshop. The result showed high satisfaction with the workshop overall, but some participants gave opinions on enhancing the quality of the workshop. With regard to the whole schedule of the workshop, they thought that the workshop period is relatively short and hoped that future training programs would have longer period and more lectures.

The Cambodian participants also signified expectations for continuous cooperation with Korea, a country with long, innovative experience in science and technology development and leading technologies in ICT, agro-processing, and bio-health. Since there are several government-affiliated science and technology institutes in each field, the participants wished to cooperate with the relevant institutes in the form of MOU or joint research. They also mentioned that STEPI will have a critical role in this kind of cooperation.
