STEPI-IICC conducted a field visit to the Wonji-Shoa Sugar Factory from 16th to 18th December 2014, together with Korean Expert, Mr. Seung-Chul Shin, Booyong Automation and Validation. The Wonji-Shoa Sugar Factory is located in Adama, 100 km from Addis Ababa and is the first sugar factory in Ethiopia built in 1951 and re-established as the first automated sugar factory in 2013. STEPI-IICC’s visit to the Wonji-Shoa factory aimed to analyze the current issues in automated sugar factory operation and to discuss a possible capacity building project. STEPI-IICC identified that there is a high demand for human resource capacity building at the Wonji-Shoa in order to overcome some of problems in operating newly inaugurated factory, particularly in the area of automation. STEPI will publish the analysis report on the Ethiopian Sugar Industry as well as put further effort to develop capacity building project tailed to Wonji Shoa sugar factory.
