The 11th Science and Technology ODA Forum was held on April 14, 2017 at the Seoul National University. Prof. Seok Dockko (Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, at Dankook University as well as Secretary General of Scientists and Engineers Without Borders) and Prof. Gwy Am Shin (Department of Environmental Engineering, at Ajou University) shared their experiences and practical know-how in appropriate technology cooperation with developing countries.

 

Appropriate Technology Centers in developing countries have been implemented by different institutes on the basis of supporting from the MSIP (Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning). Currently, three Appropriate Technology Centers are established in Cambodia (Innovative Water Center, iWc), Laos (Lao-Korea Sustainable Energy and Agriculture Center, SEAC), and Nepal (Nepal-Korea Science and Technology Center, Nepal Innovation Technology and Entrepreneurship Center, NITEC). In addition, three more centers are expected to be open in the near future in Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Vietnam.
 

 

As a principal investigator of implementing agency of the 1st Appropriate Technology Center, (the Innovative Water Center) at Cambodia, Prof. Seok Dockko introduced a concept of appropriate technology as well as projects for building Appropriate Technology Center. He also shared his valuable experiences in Cambodia including best practices and failures during the last 4 years of the project.


Prof. Gwy Am Shin, a principle investigator of the 4th Appropriate Technology Center recently established in Ethiopia, presented the detailed information including a project plan. The Center in Ethiopia will deliver an integrated approach to achieve its sustainability by mainly focusing on the development of water, energy, and agricultural system.

Each Appropriate Technology Center is established at local university in order to achieve sustainable education and training even after completion of 4-year project. Both experts emphasized the significance of cooperation with the universities and highlighted the importance of sustainable development through capacity building of local experts. STEPI was able to have fruitful discussion with two experts after the presentations and agreed to actively deepen the cooperation for upcoming events in order to achieve sustainable development.
