STEPI and Mekelle University signed an MOU on 18th August in which both parties agreed on the promotion of research and cooperation on science and technology.

The agreement was requested by Mekelle University after the delegation visited STEPI in June 2014 to discuss the possibility of cooperation with STEPI-IICC to enhance the university’s capacity. In particular, the university has a plan to build a science and technology park in their campus and the delegation asked STEPI for consultation.
Above all, the agreement lays the foundation for both organizations to invest their utmost efforts to encourage cooperation on major areas which include: Science and Technology Park development and advancement, Faculty capacity development and exchange, Joint research development and advancement, and University-Industry linkage development and technology transfer.

During the signing ceremony, Dr. Jung-Won Lee, the Vice President of STEPI, remarked that Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) play an essential role in national development and building a sustainable society. He further added that STEPI is pleased to work together with Mekelle University in order to support the university to achieve the goal which is to become one of the top 25 universities in Africa by 2025.

With expansion of global network, IICC is expected to play a critical role not only to support development of its counterpart but also to promote Korea’s STI experience in developing countries.
