I’m Abdissa Yilma Tiky and I used to work as Technology Advisor to the Minister of Science and Technology (MoST) of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE). I recently came to Korea to study Technology Management Economics and Policy Program (TEMEP) at Seoul National University and my course will start at the beginning of September 2014.

My first visit to Korea was back in 2008 and since then I have visited Korea about five times; during my visits, I had a chance to learn how science and technology contributed to the miraculous economic growth of Korea. Furthermore, I was attracted by the hospitality of Koreans which is very similar to Ethiopian culture.

Currently Ethiopia is going through a remarkable economic growth with a vision of pulling itself out from poverty and joining middle income economy by the year 2025. Realizing the fact that such vision cannot be achieved without capable human resources the government is putting its best effort to cultivate the human capital needed at all levels both domestically and abroad. Moreover, Korea as a nation with know-hows and experience from the early days of development, was one of the major benchmarked countries when forming the new Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Policy in Ethiopia.

In this respect, the graduate program I am engaged in is assumed to contribute its share in building the capability of MoST to execute its mission. Besides my graduate study at Seoul National University I am also mandated by MoST to work in partnership with STEPI-IICC. After a thorough discussion at the consultation meeting that took place recently in Addis Ababa, STEPI-IICC and MoST came up with two collaborative project proposal as a means to effectively implement the MoU which was signed on February 2014.

Hence as an official representative of MoST, I will also be working at Korea–Ethiopia Innovation Center (KEIC) in STEPI-IICC with a major mission of realizing the project proposals. I’m very much looking forward to working with members of STEPI-IICC and I hope we can achieve a valuable outcome through close cooperation.
