Colombia Project Team from STEPI-IICC, led by Dr. Yongsuk Jang, the project manager, had their third visit to Colombia from January 11 to February 7 as part of the project “Establishment of Master Plan for Capacity Building of STI Parks in Colombia”.

The purpose of the visit was to draft the master plan in collaboration with the Colombian partners. Each STEPI expert in charge of a STI park worked together with the very dedicated Colombian team to draft the master plan and thoroughly reviewed the collected data and information. One of the main tasks of this visit was to ensure alignment between the national STI park strategy and the master plans both in development process. Additional interviews were conducted to gather more data and information to analyze the regional status and understand the context of the parks. At the end of the stay at each site, a two-day workshop was held to review the progress of the master plan and identify areas in need of further development. STEPI team also met with the relevant stakeholders from the national and regional government, businesses and organizations to request for their support for STI parks. The stakeholders expressed their key interest for the STI parks to become the window to play the mediating role by connecting R&D and technology with the companies that seek for solutions and services to create innovation. Furthermore, many expect STI parks to function as a platform for the innovation actors to bring greater value and prosperity to the region.

Launched in May 2014, the objectives of the project are 1) to establish the STI park strategy at the national level, 2) to develop master plans for three regional STI parks of Parque Biopacifico in Palmira, Valle del Cauca, Parque Tecnologico Guatiguara in Bucaramanga, Santander, and Bogota STI Park and 3) to strengthen Colombian STI capacity at both regional and national level. In the coming months, STEPI team and Colombian partners will work closely to complete the draft of the master plan.
