Sri Lankan Ambassador Visits STEPI

Honorable Ambassador of Sri Lanka, Manisha Gunasekera, visited STEPI on February 12, 2016 to discuss the possible areas of cooperation between Korea and Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is currently undergoing a transitional period moving towards innovative economy with an average of 8 percent GDP annual growth. The government of Sri Lanka committed to increase R&D investment from 0.15 percent GERD/GDP in 2010 to 1 percent STA/GDP by 2016, and to build a strong STI basis to achieve the goal of moving from the lower middle income country to a high income country. Korea is an aspiration for Sri Lanka with its experience of achieving rapid economic development based on STI.

Although STI and IT have not been an area of strong cooperation between the two countries, Ambassador Gunasekera expressed the keen interest to create strong partnership and benchmark Korean experience by prioritizing STI as the key area of cooperation between the two countries. STEPI has agreed to identify specific areas of cooperation in alignment with the priorities of Sri Lanka. The ambassador promised to play a role of facilitator for STI cooperation especially between STEPI and the key STI institutions in Sri Lanka to enable economic prosperity.
