Visiting Researcher Program for the second half year 2017

The Visiting Researcher Program was implemented for the maximum 3 weeks from October 14th to October 31st, 2017 in Korea. This program aims to promote STI research capabilities of researchers from partner countries and expand global network of STEPI. The three participants are attached to the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology of Tanzania, Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research of Tunisia and Competitiveness Group Inc. of Ecuador.

The Visiting Researcher Program is composed of various activities such as research mentoring, country reporting & research reporting seminars, study visits and Korean cultural experiences, etc. These activities were carried out mainly in Sejong, Seoul and Daejeon. At the beginning of the program, the country reporting seminar was held in STEPI. The researchers made a presentation about the STI policy including S&T institutional framework, S&T national plan, S&T infrastructure and the agenda of cooperation on STI fields in their country. Not only the visiting researcher, but also Korean researchers shared S&T policy issues in various countries and had opportunities for academic exchanges.

Also, the visiting researchers introduced their research topic such as comparative study on STI policy, National Innovation System and Innovation Ecosystem in research reporting seminar. They discussed how their research will be developed with the senior experts of STEPI.

The program provided the research mentoring or interview to develop their own research topic in more detail. They conducted interviews with Korean experts in the fields of STI policy, technology transfer and technology marketing as well as entrepreneurial ecosystem, etc. They discussed the main contents, research methodology, and current issues in their research topics with many experts mainly from STEPI and other institutions such as Hoseo University.

They also participated in the 13th Science and Technology ODA Forum entitled Foresight, Practice & Policy for Sustainable Development of Transport System hosted by STEPI-IICC. This forum provided a chance to broaden their perspectives and ideas. Besides, they attended Daejeon Science Festival and visited to KAIST and KAERI(Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute).

The program includes cultural visits such as Sejong Government Complex, Presidential Archives in Sejong and the SK T.um in Seoul.

STEPI-IICC tries to make a program tailored to meet the specific needs of the visiting researchers and to strengthen S&T policy capabilities of partner countries by sharing Korea's STI policy experiences.

We conducted an interview evaluating the program with visiting researchers. They expressed their thanks that the program provided opportunity for access to research database at STEPI, and for international interaction among researchers of various countries. The scholars made a comparative study on science and technology policy, especially, benchmarking research on Korean experiences on STI policy establishment of Dr. Rogers, Korean ecosystem of Ms. Gabriela and Infrastructure for development of Science, Technology and Innovation of Mr. Zied.
